Sprockets and chains wear out. When the chain stretches beyond the end of the adjustment mark on the swingarm it must be replaced. The chain and the sprockets should be replaced as a unit because a worn sprocket can decrease the longevity or possibly damage a newly replaced chain.Your vehicle usually comes with a steel rear sprocket from the factory. You have a choice of replacing the heavy stock steel sprocket or changing to a much lighter aluminum rear sprocket. Technological advances in the manufacturing of some aluminum sprockets can extend their serviceability to almost equal steel.

Check the quality before you buy. Not all sprockets are equal. Almost all racers change to 520 pitch and aluminum because of the weight saving advantage. However, they use the strongest chain available such as the EK MVXZ chain. You generally match the tensile strength of a chain to the cc's of the motor. Step one is to determine if you want to retain the stock configuration of your vehicle or change its performance by altering its gearing. If you want your machine to have more initial acceleration and are willing to give up some top end speed you can eliminate a tooth on the front sprocket or add teeth to the rear sprocket. Each tooth on the front sprocket equals about three teeth on the rear. This will result in a higher RPM at any given speed.

If you want more top end and are willing to give up some initial acceleration you can add a tooth to the front sprocket or reduce the tooth size of the rear. This is particularly useful for long distance trips or commuting as it will lower the engine RPM at any given speed. The best way to make any changes is to consult your local DRIVEN dealer for advice. We will be glad to help.Keep in mind all our kits come with the proper strength chain for each bike and cut to length. CHAIN CARE BASICS You should lube your chain every 300 miles.Use a high quality chain lube like DRIVEN CHAIN JUICE to prolong the life of your chain. Adjust your chain following the manufacturers specs.Check it by pushing up from the bottom center ofthe chain. It should give about an inch of upward movement. Too tight will wear out sprockets prematurely and possibly damage transmissions. Happy riding.
